In conjunction with a :30 tie-in spot, DIRECTV turned Channel 111 into a dedicated “Whopper Lust” ad unit for Burger King, where viewers tuned-in during an exclusive one-week period to win a free Whopper. By watching a spinning burger on-screen for five mintues and successfully interacting at cued intervals with their remote, participants earned a free Whopper certificate by mail.
The commercial was so successful that the original allocation of giveaway burgers for the entire week was claimed within the first four hours. After more than tripling their giveaway numbers, Burger King eventually had to post a “SOLD OUT” notice before week‘s end.
The phenomenal response also led to posts of fan videos on YouTube, documenting their own Whopper Lust experience.
